Hundreds of fishermen and fish traders in Dunga beach in Kisumu today received free masks courtesy of Ken Obura Foundation.
Dunga is among the beaches affected by the rising water levels which have hard hit the fishermen who have now reduced fishing activities.
Joel Otieno the Dunga Beach Management Unit (BMU) Chairman says the free masks which are key to laid down anti covid19 prevention methods have come as a great relief.
Otieno says most fishermen have lost income as a result of hampered fishing activities in the lake and thus such support is welcomed.
He says they will conform to the directives as a way of combating the spread of the virus to allow the government to freeze some of the restrictions.
Stephen Odhoch Ogendo who is a fisherman in Dunga and one of the beneficiaries, however, slammed local leaders for not responding to their needs at the time of need.
Ogendo says elected leaders must be in the forefront to cushion the locals from the effects of the virus that has led to the shut down of many business ventures.
