Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has appealed to the national government to speed up the construction of Koru-Soin dam to address the perennial flooding downstream.
Nyong’o says the construction of the dam is the only solution in sight to avert sufferings and displacement caused by flooding.
He says the dam will be able to control water flowing down stream thus cushioning resident from losing their property during rainy season.
Nyong’o who spoke a he flagged food donations to flood victims in Nyando and Muhoroni sub counties, says a dam will be beneficial in terms of crop production in the area.
He says the flooding caused by River Nyando after bursting its banks on Tuesday has displaced a round 32,000 persons.
Nyong’o says the relevant authorities are still on the ground evacuating stranded families as rains continue to hit pars of Western Kenya region.
The affected families are camping in various evacuation camps where the food donations will be given out.
The Governor appealed for more support from well-wishers to donate food and non food stuff to reach out to the flood victim and the vulnerable in the society in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.
