Learners living with hearing impairment in Migori County are now appealing for special masks to aid their learning.
The learners who resumed after schools’ reopened said they are affected by the masks worn by their tutors since they sometimes refer to lip-reading besides signs.
Most of the hearing impaired learners decode information by analyzing both sign language and lip-movement of the tutors hence wearing of masks limits them from getting some message.
They now want the government to introduce special transparent masks that will enable them to participate and interact with their teachers and colleagues.
Millicent Cassianes Akinyi, a special education instructor at BL’ Tezza Speciacl school for the hearing impaired said they have had challenges communicating with the learners since their mouths are covered in masks.
