National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has closed down Kibos Sugar and Allied Company in Kisumu over air pollution.
NEMA Director General Mamo Mamo says the company was given 30 days ultimatum to comply with air regulations last month.
Mamo says 30 days elapsed today with the company failing to comply.
He says the air quality regulation of 2014 was not adhered to by the company.
The DG says according to the regulation, factories must maintain 50 micro meters of what their emit into the atmosphere.
However, Kibos is emitting 245 micro meters, more than 5 times above the national standards.
Mamo in a letter to Kibos directed that there boilers will remain shut until they install an effective air pollution control system.
The company recently won an appeal case after an environment high court in Kisumu ordered for its closure following pollution of local rivers.
