Matatu officials enforcing traffic law

Officials of Matatu Owners Association in Kisumu have taken it upon themselves to ensure traffic rules are adhered to as stipulated by the government in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

The Association Kisumu branch chairman Bob Andala says they have noticed a number of motorists are flouting the traffic rules aimed at combating the spread of the virus.

Andala says the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has been particular with motorist going against the rules.

Just last week, a Sacco of a town service vehicle was deregistered after one of the fleets was caught on the wrong side of the law.

Andala says the officials of the Association will be on the roads to create awareness among their motorists not to go against the directives issued by the transport ministry.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Andala says town service vehicles are notorious in bending the traffic rules.

He says they have put more emphasis on the town service vehicles so as to save a number of Saccos from being deregistered.

The chairman says the number of passengers in most of the vehicles exceeds the required number.

Andala says they have requested NTSA to take stern action on the drivers and touts found to be flouting traffic rules.
