Principal Administrative Secretary in the ministry of interior and coordination Kangethe Thuku says the government is in the process of recruiting 200,000 youths under the national hygiene program dubbed kazi mtaani.

The program that was initiated to mitigate the effects of corona virus in the economy especially to cushion youths from suffering is already running in eight counties on a trial basis.

Thuku says the recruitment for phase two is ongoing and the government is using the nyumba kumi platforms to identify beneficiaries.

Thuku says the youths will be identified from the informal settlements and will be vetted before being recruited to earn daily wages for cleaning their environment.

Speaking in Kisumu, Thuku says the first pilot phase is already running well in informal settlements in kisumu with 2300 youths being paid Kshs 653 daily.

He says the government has also given them protective gears like gloves and gumboots as they clean drainages and sweep streets in their neighborhoods.
