The county government of Kisumu has come under sharp criticism just hours after de-registering all the boda boda Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in the county and freezing their bank accounts.
A non state actor, Transform Empowerment for Action Initiative (TEAM) country director George Collins slammed Governor Anyang Nyong’o for taking such a decision.
Nyong’o had announced that the county security committee together with the county leadership took the decision after some elements penetrated the boda boda groups to commit criminal activities.
George Collins says the county security team ought to have narrowed down on the boda boda Sacco that brought mayhem leading to two deaths and several injured last week in Manyatta.
He says that even in the matatu sector, it is only the Sacco that is always penalized incase of any accident on the road.
Collins says Nyong’o should rescind the decision and stop penalizing boda boda Saccos across the county who had nothing to do with the incident in Kisumu.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Collins says boda boda riders’ work hard every day to make ends meet and told the county to boost their work instead of curtailing their progress.
He told Governor Nyong’o to focus on preparedness towards combating COVID-19 and leave alone boda boda riders to carry on with their work.
Collins faulted political leaders in Kisumu for failing to find lasting solutions to issues bedeviling boda boda and hawkers sectors.
He says the leaders were mum when the county was pulling down business structures leading to lack of economic power among the people.
Collins says those who brought chaos in Manyatta should be arrested to face justice instead of condemning the whole boda boda fraternity in the county.
