Well off families in Nyalenda B ward, Kisumu Central Sub County have been called upon to volunteer and give food and non food items to the less fortunate in the society.

The call was made on Wednesday after the former area MCA James Oyugi Were took personal donations to the flood victims from Kapuothe area.

“It is my humble plea to those who are well off to come to the aid of those who are unable. Let’s donate whatever is available to these people,” he said.

Were said floods has displaced hundreds of families in the ward and are currently putting up at Nanga primary school as the evacuation centre.

With fears of Corona virus that has affected businesses, residents are staring at hunger as Were promises to continue mobilizing funds from friends and well wishers to aid the vulnerable group in the society.

“I have given out masks to these families residing here at the school, I also gave out mosquito nets to cushion them from mosquito bites,” he said.

Were announced that soon he will organize for a free medical camp for the families since they are exposed to cold that can make them susceptible to diseases.

Kapuothe village elder, Tabitha Odinga who is also among the families displaced by the floods hailed the school management for coming to their aid at the hour of need.

Odinga says the school classrooms have provided them with a place to sleep for the families some with very young children.

She thanked their former MCA for the quick intervention at a time no elected leader has set foot at the school to see the condition on where they live.

“We are here 45 households with 102 children,” she said. We are grateful for the donations of maize flour, cooking oil and sugar amongst other necessities”.

A beneficiary of the donation too was over joyous as she appealed to Were not to make his appearance with donation a one off exercise.
