A combined search has been mounted in River Nzoia in Siaya County where five people drowned on Saturday while trying to retrieve a body of a relative who had drowned a day earlier.
The County Police Commander Francis Kooli says the search was suspended last evening due to darkness.
Kooli says no body has been retrieved so far as locals join security agencies in locating the bodies.
The five who drowned were part of a nine man team that had set out on a speed motor boat to retrieve the body of a male person that drowned on Friday.
Four other people managed to swim to safety as strong waves in the river hit the boat that capsized.
Speaking over phone, Kooli says security team is working closely with local divers and elders to retrieve the bodies.
The search team is now looking for six bodies with fears that they might be washed downstream into Lake Victoria.
Kooli says they have been advised by the elders that the bodies will float at a given time even as they continue with the search.
He says the earlier drowning incident was not reported to the police and told the public to always report such incidences to the authorities.
