Kirinyaga Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru was Tuesday impeached after 23 ward representatives out of 33 voted in favour of a censure motion, citing abuse of office and gross violation of the constitution. Four of the ward reps abstained from the voting while six members were absent.
The impeachment motion was filed by Mutira Ward MCA David Kinyua. Kinyua had earlier lamented that their attempts to meet the governor to resolve the issues raised had failed.
In a strategic move to ensure the censure motion is passed in the county assembly, about 20 MCA’s who had endorsed Waiguru’s ouster spent Monday night in the county assembly. The MCAs went further and switched off their phones to avoid any form of coercion and intimidation.
The censure motion did not pass without a fight with MCAs exchanging blows and harsh insults against each other during the debate. The session had to be temporarily stopped for order to be restored. Trouble started when the MCA David Kinyua rose to move the motion of impeachment against Ms Waiguru. .
Karumandi MCA Antony Munene and his nominated counterpart Lucy Njeri then rose to claim that their signatures had been forged, as their names appeared in the list of those seeking to impeach Ms Waiguru yet they were opposed to the motion.
