Jecinta Achieng, who was a Form Two student at Ran’gala Girls High School in Siaya County, was shot dead by police in Kisumu on May 9, 2023 on a motorcycle as she went shopping for school supplies.
She was among the four people who sustained gunshot injuries during yesterday’s clash between police and jua kali artisans.
Achieng was rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital by good Samaritans, but she succumbed to her injuries before treatment after Police opened fire on a hostile crowd in Kisumu’s Jua Kali area yesterday.
Trouble started when police officers chased a public service vehicle into Jua Kali area. The driver got out and ran towards the mechanics’ area. The police retreated as a crowd began to form. Other traders in the area then joined the fray. That is when one of the officers started shooting.
Angered by the turn of events, traders took to the streets. Activities in the lake side city were paralyzed for most of the morning by the protests.Â
Kisumu County Police Commander Alphonse Kimathi assured the mechanics that the matter would be investigated.
