The High Court on Tuesday declined to suspend implementation of 16% VAT on petroleum products.

Following the petitions that had been filed by COTU and  activist Okiya Omtatah on Monday. In his ruling Justice Chacha Mwita directed that the matter be served to the respondents and certified the matter as urgent.

Activist Okiya Omtatah in his petition  said  the decision to impose the new levy would have a negative impact on members of the public.Currently the transport sector has already increased the basic fares by 20 percent.

The introduction of 16% VAT on petroleum products comes after Treasury CS Henry Rotich allowed the implementation of the new levy which is in defiance to Parliament which suspended it for two years.
