Tergat, who is the NOC-K President, is a distinguished cross-country runner of major repute with five (5) consecutive world titles in the event between 1995-99, has expressed elation on being given the honour by World Athletics.

“Cross country brings out all the elements an athlete wants to experience in running- the thrill, the twists and turns in different courses simply incredible challenges to overcome before you finish. I think it is actually like the story of life”, said Tergat.

The NOC-K supremo played a similar role when the event was held in Kampala 2017.

He is not only a cross-country great but is also an Olympic silver medalist in 10,000m- Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000.

World class athletes are now preparing for the challenging Barthust course, among them Kenyan athletes as they wind up the cross-country season, their preparations on track with the National Cross-Country Championships scheduled for this Saturday 21st January at the Kenya Prisons Training College, Ruiru.

Reacting to this honour, Tergat had the following to add:

‘The cross country will always be a special event in my athletics career for ages to come.’

‘It evokes very nostalgic and fond memories because this is really where my long athletics career was birthed, developed and blossomed with the crowning of five (5) straight world cross championship titles between 1995-99.’
