Residents from the Lake Victoria region have been advised to modernize fish farming by using the right fish feed as a way of boosting the sector.
According to Mr. Dickson Jawichre, the general manager at Unga Farm Care, the region especially Siaya County has a great potential in reaping big in the fishing industry.
Speaking at Nyamonye in Bondo Sub County during the launch of one of their new fish feeds, he says that globally fish has a ready market and that would translate to steady income for the fish farmers.
Jawichre told the fish farmers that for them to realize the profits that come with fish farming, they must ensure they use quality feed that will ensure the fish grow faster and to the required size and weight.
Present during the launch was Bondo MP Dr. Gideon Ochanda who said that rearing fish in cages and ponds has been very challenging due to lack of proper feeds.
He regrets that most fish farmers have been depending entirely on locally available fish feeds commonly Known as Ochong’a which he says is not translating into the desired profit.
The legislator therefore challenged the fish farmers to organize themselves so that they can have a structured engagement with organizations like Unga limited to see on how they can get feed as a subsided price.
The launch was also attended by the managing Director Unga Holdings Group Nicholas Hutchinson, former Alego Usonga MP Sammy Weya , various aqua experts and fish farmers.
